Floratam St. Augustine sod is ideal for shady areas with moderate foot traffic.
This sod was developed in the 1970s by the Florida and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations as a chinch bug and SAD virus resistant sod. However, chinch bug resistance is still an issue with Floratam sod.
Floratam sod requires more than 6 hours of sunlight a day and thrives in warm weather. It is a vigorous, coarse textured sod variety, similar to other sod varieties in Florida. The stolons are large and a redish-purple color with 3" internodes on average. Floratam sod has wider, longer leaf blades than common St. Augustine sod. It can extend stolons laterally by 3/4" a day.
Floratam is highly drought tolerant sod and repeatedly ranks highly in dehydration avoidance tests.
Floratam is the most popular sod in Orlando and all of Florida.
